The Super Bowl this season is filled with excellent storylines. Both the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers have had a great season, and a title win would cap off a remarkable campaign for both teams.

Although the Chiefs are looking to become the first team since the New England Patriots in the mid-2000s to repeat as Super Bowl champions, it’s the 49ers that have some interesting storylines heading into the title game.

A major and somewhat amusing storyline heading into the Super Bowl surrounds the Niners’ backup QB, Sam Darnold. The former Carolina Panthers‘ QB will become the first first-round quarterback from the 2018 Draft class to play in the ultimate game. That draft class also included the likes of Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.

Darnold was selected third overall by the New York Jets but failed to make an immediate impact. He was then traded to the Panthers for a season and a half before joining the Niners in 2023.

Although he hasn’t played a lot this season, Darnold has been great whenever he has gotten the chance to perform. Now he will play in his first Super Bowl, albeit as a backup to Brock Purdy.

Allen and Jackson both had a great chance this season to get to the Super Bowl. However, both of them failed to get past the indomitable Patrick Mahomes, who overcame both the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens for a spot in the Super Bowl this season.

The 2018 NFL Draft class was stacked with some great QB talent. Baker Mayfield was selected first overall in that draft.

The two players, though, who have had great success from that year’s draft pool are the Buffalo Bills’ QB Josh Allen and the Baltimore Ravens‘ quarterback Lamar Jackson.

However, Sam Darnold, who was selected third overall in that draft, became the first 1st-round quarterback to reach the Super Bowl.

Darnold is the backup quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, and although he hasn’t featured in a lot of games this season, the former New York Jets QB will taste the Super Bowl atmosphere in Las Vegas on February 11. Fans on social media were shocked to learn the fact and reacted accordingly.

The Niners defeated the Detroit Lions in their NFC Championship game on Sunday. The Chiefs, on the other hand, took care of business against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game. It will be a fascinating Super Bowl matchup at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
