JJ Watt shocked the whole Arizona Cardinals fandom with a cryptic tweet yesterday, where he announced that he’ll retire at the end of the 2022 season and has already played his last home game.
Watt was a regular in the NFL for more than a decade since starting his career at the Houston Texans in 2011 and playing with them until 2020. This is his second season with the Cardinals as the DE decides to hang up his cleats for good.
The Cardinals DE is regarded as one of the best in his position currently in the league. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year for three times and is still going strong.
Watt welcomed a new member of his small family and shared the news of the birth of his baby boy with his retirement announcement. Maybe, family plays a big part in people’s perception of carrying on and keep playing. “Koa’s first ever NFL game, my last ever NFL home game,” Watt stated in a tweet. “My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude. It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure.”
The 33-year-old DE will play out the remaining two regular season away games and bid goodbye to the beautiful game for good as there are no hopes for playoffs this season for the Cardinals.

Watt’s retirement news was shocking and exciting at the same time as his tweet made people believe that the DE is taking premature retirement due to the birth of his son. The reason for his retirement is still unknown. However, he will still go down as one of the best in his position for quite some time.
NFL Twitter took notice of his achievements and celebrated the Cardinal DE by paying tribute to him. Many regarded him as a future Hall of Famer. The Cardinals will surely miss his presence in defense and will have to find a replacement who is technically really strong.
