On February 1, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady posted a short video on his social media accounts announcing his retirement from the sport he dominated for more than two decades. Following his retirement, many legends of the game paid their tributes to the veteran quarterback, but the Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan stirred the pot with his controversial take.

Following Brady’s retirement, Titans OT Taylor Lewan suggested that the National Football League should retire Brady’s Number 12 jersey as a tribute to the legendary quarterback. “We should retire the number 12 for every team in the NFL,” tweeted Lewan after the Buccaneers QB retired on Tuesday. This controversial take didn’t sit well with many people on social media.

Now, it’s almost given that Brady’s former team New England Patriots will retire his jersey because of all of his accomplishments for their team including but not limited to winning six Super Bowl rings. Furthermore, the Buccaneers might think about doing the same since the 15-time Pro Bowler helped their team to win their first Super Bowl ring in more than two decades.

However, the notion that the entire league should retire a jersey number, even if it is for a legendary quarterback like Tom Brady might be a bit of a stretch according to the fans of other teams.

The Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan’s controversial suggestion did not sit well with the NFL fans on social media. The general audience believes Tom Brady, as legendary as his career is, does not warrant his jersey number to be a leaguewide retired number.

Among major US sports, only three jerseys have been retired leaguewide. In MLB, due to being the first African-American to play in the league, Brooklyn Dodgers’ Jackie Robinson has his number 42 retired around the league.

Furthermore, in NBA, Boston Celtics center Bill Russell, who has won the most league championships (11) has his Number 6 retired leaguewide. And in NHL, Edmonton Oilers center Wayne Gretzky, who is considered the greatest Hockey player ever has his number 99 retired league-wide for his achievements.

Among four Major US Sports, the only sport that doesn’t have a leaguewide retired jersey number is football, and if anyone deserves to be the first to change that it would be the greatest quarterback to ever play the sport, Tom Brady.
