Even the usually cool-minded Mike Tomlin got fed up with the alleged horrible decisions the referees made against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. It cost Tomlin his third game of the season.

Officiating in the NFL has been a massive talking point lately. In almost every game, a few calls by the referees have put a question mark on their legitimacy and even shouts of being biased.

This doesn’t paint a good picture considering the increasing involvement of technology in the game. A section would argue this should help make decisions easier, but that’s not the case.

The Steelers had a rough start against the Jacksonville Jaguars, getting outplayed throughout the first three quarters. This would bother coach Tomlin, but not to the degree of lashing out against a referee.

That’s exactly what happened after witnessing several penalties given against them. A camera caught him saying a few words to a female official. If lip reading is any form of deciphering inaudible chatter, then the 51-year-old said these words:

What the fu*k is wrong with you all today?

Why was Mike Tomlin not happy with the referees?

Pittsburg was trailing 9-3 when Chris Boswell’s 55-yard field goal was called back after an offsides penalty to right guard Isaac Seumalo. He was deemed to be in the neutral zone during the snap, resulting in a five-yard penalty. Boswell missed from 61 yards.

After the game, Mike Tomlin told the reporters he had never seen this given in his entire coaching career.

I hadn’t seen that called in 17 years of standing on the sidelines. Aligned offsides on a guard, on a field goal protection. It doesn't matter. I have never seen that.
Tomlin said via the Associated Press.

This was not the only call that riled not just the coaching staff but also the players. Quarterback Kenny Pickett had to go off after a blow to his ribs from Jags defensive end Adam Gotsis. Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson claimed:

They [referees] should get fined for making terrible calls.

An ex-NFL referee said the Steelers offside call was wrong

Mike Pereira, who is the former vice president of officiating in the NFL and currently works with FOX as an analyst, claimed that the offside call on Seumalo was horrible. If it had been in Pittsburgh’s favor, maybe the scores would be different.

Offside on the offensive guard? Officials are told to call that if a lineman has his head in the [neutral zone] on short yardage push plays, not on field goal attempts.

The Jaguars took home their sixth win of the season. This loss will hurt a lot for Mike Tomlin’s Steelers because not only did they lose Pickett, but it’s a short week as they face the Tennessee Titans on Thursday.
