American TV personality Stephen A. Smith recently previewed the upcoming game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he discussed the comparison between Joe Burrow and Tom Brady. Burrow is currently one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and is projected to be the next big thing.

Speaking on the latest episode of First Take, Smith also talked about the brewing rivalry between Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes. 49ers’ Mahomes is also one of the best QBs in the league. Smith compared the Joe Burrow-Patrick Mahomes rivalry with the iconic Tom Brady-Peyton Manning. According to him, many initially thought that Manning was better than Brady in terms of skills, but Brady would beat him every time.

“Things have changed. That wasn’t the case with Tom Brady. Okay. And so you got to look at it from those two perspectives. And last but not least, we see that this is where the similarity comes in. Repeatedly, we saw Tom Brady. But many people thought Peyton Manning was better. But Tom Brady would beat him. Right?” Smith said.

Such is the case with the Burrow-Mahomes rivalry. Mahomes, who was drafted in 2017, was always considered better in terms of skill level than Burrow, who was drafted in 2020. Time and again, Burrow has beaten Mahomes, and that’s what Smith pointed out. He said that everyone believed Mahomes is better, but Burrow keeps beating him and that’s the similarity with the Brady-Manning rivalry.

“We think Patrick Mahomes is better, but Joe Burrow keeps beating him. Yeah, that’s the similarity. And so we got to pay attention to that moving forward. And that’s why we got to look at Joe Burrow and say, ‘Yo, you know, he’s that dude, we can’t deny,” he added.

Burrow has a clean record against Mahomes. He is 3-0 up on his counterpart and is yet to lose a game against him. All these 3 games took place in 2022 and every time Burrow has beaten Mahomes by a minimal margin of 3 points. They met twice in January where the Bengals defeated the Chiefs 34-31 and 27-24 to clinch the AFC North title and the AFC Championship, respectively. For the third time, they met a couple of weeks ago where the Bengals won 27-24 again.
