“He AIN’T ever coaching in the NFL”: Stephen A. Smith makes a BOLD statement on Jon Gruden’s coaching career

Jon Gruden and Stephen A. Smith

Jon Gruden, the former NFL Head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders issued a public apology earlier yesterday claiming full responsibility for his comments that surfaced after a bunch of emails that he shared leaked into the public domain. His apology had a lot of mixed responses but the underlying sentiment under all the responses was that his statement accomplished nothing, it did not improve his chances of getting another shot at coaching in the league. Gruden made some strange points in his apology that one would have not expected.

The Head Coach mentioned that he is ashamed of his behavior and will not make any excuses for that, he goes on to add that he regularly goes to church and is religious in nature, he specifies that he has been married for 31 years and has three children who all love football. Gruden accepts his mistake and hopes that he will get another shot at coaching in the NFL. First Take host Stephen A. Smith does not believe that the coach will get a second chance with the Las Vegas Raiders or any other team.

“Jon Gruden offended the WHOLE gambit”: Stephen A. Smith does not think any team would want to take a chance on Jon Gruden.

Stephen A. Smith knows Jon Gruden for a long time, Gruden used to work at ESPN before he became a Head Coach and the two were coworkers. With that being said, Smith also began by stating that everyone irrespective of what they did, deserves a second chance. “We don’t want to castigate someone and expel them from society if they didn’t commit a criminal offense. We are the land of second chances,” Smith states.

However, he goes on to add that Jon Gruden’s time as a head coach is done, he will never get another chance at coaching. “Jon Gruden ain’t gonna coach in the NFL anymore, the article said racist that’s black folks, primarily, it said homophobic, that’s Michael Sam, it said misogynistic, that’s female officials. Jon Gruden offended the whole gambit, he didn’t miss too much when it came to offending people through those emails. That’s where the problem lies, if it were one category it would be bad enough. I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt but he made a bad mistake, no question. It wasn’t just an email, it was emails spanning seven years from 2011 to 2018. Here’s the problem, it wasn’t just against people of a hue or ethnicity, it was homophobic, misogynistic, and racist.”

Stephen A. also does not like the fact that these emails were sent at a time when the entire nation was changing its thoughts, people were evolving and so was their mindset but despite all this, Gruden continued to send these emails. “I think that there is slim to no chance that he gets to be a head coach again because in the NFL, considering the direction that this league has gone in. In college football, if you walk into someone’s living room, there will be a problem. In certain parts of the country, he could coach, he might be able to but it is daunting, to say the least.”

It is highly doubtful if Gruden will ever get another coaching job because, in the NFL or college, a coach is supposed to be a person whom you respect and who brings the locker room together but knowing what we know now, Jon Gruden will always be viewed as a person who would disrupt and divide the locker room rather than unify it. Students will not respect him and no matter what he says, people will always remember what he did. Considering a significant number of the top players are of color, the last thing they would want to do is play for such a man.

On his own team, Carl Nassib became the first openly gay player to play in the NFL while Gruden was coaching, let us not get into the subject of race because that is one that is extremely sensitive and dear to the hearts of every player of color in the league. The NFL is now attempting to bring in more female fans, we have female officials refereeing games now, and at a time when Daniel Snyder is facing the music for his views and behavior towards his female employees, there is no way Jon Gruden gets a job offer. He simply brings more harm than good, he’s a good coach but not a great one, and he ended his own coaching career.
