This year, the Super Bowl LVII is going to be a special one. For the first time in the event’s history, two Black quarterbacks will be simultaneously starting for the teams seeded to play the prestigious final event of the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles (14-3) will be taking on the Kansas City Chiefs (14-3), with the teams having Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes as their QBs, respectively.
This will be a historic matchup in the history of the Super Bowl since Doug Williams became the first Black quarterback to start and win the Super Bowl. This matchup will also form the youngest quarterbacks to face off in the 51 years of the Super Bowl.
Speaking of their playing credentials, both Mahomes and Hurts are a class apart in their roles for their teams. Mahomes is leading his way to becoming the MVP of the season, leading the passing yards (5,250) and touchdowns (41) by a fairly wide margin. On the other hand, Jalen Hurts had a phenomenal season with the Eagles, leading an 8-0 start.

The Super Bowl is about to witness a historic matchup that was never seen before in the event’s history. Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts have led their teams to the penultimate event of the NFL season, the Super Bowl LVII. Both players have shown incredible bouts of performance to book their berths for the Super Bowl this season.
Jalen Hurts’ win against the San Francisco 49ers at the NFC Championship has got the NFL community talking about him in high regard. The QB threw for 121 yards and had no passing touchdowns nor interceptions. Furthermore, he finished 39 yards on the ground for the Eagles. Philadelphia won the match against the 49ers with the final score of 31-7.
On the other hand, Mahomes had a much more enthralling game on his end. With the Chiefs, Mahomes led his team to a 23-30 win over the Cincinnati Bengals at the AFC Championship. The QB threw for 326 yards and scored two touchdowns to land the Chiefs a secured place at the Super Bowl LVII.
Mahomes previously became the third Black QB to win the Super Bowl in 2020. He led the Kansas City Chiefs to a dominant victory over the 49ers. In 2021, he had another moment to shine and grab a second Super Bowl win. However, the Chiefs were overwhelmed by Tom Brady’s side, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If either of the teams wins, history will be created for the Black community in the NFL. Hurts will become the fourth Black QB to win the Super Bowl if the Eagles win. Otherwise, Mahomes will become the first Black QB with multiple Super Bowl wins with Kansas City Chiefs.
The Super Bowl LVII is scheduled for February 12, 2022, from 6.30 PM ET and will be broadcasted on Fox’s networks.
