“Recently, I was diagnosed with APL”: Texans rookie John Metchie III to miss 2022 season due to leukemia
John Metchie III
Metchie was the 44th overall pick in the 2022 draft. The 22-year-old wide receiver made 96 catches for 1142 yards and also managed to get eight touchdowns for Alabama before tearing his ACL in the SEC championship game.
He helped lead the team to a national championship for which he was awarded the Jon Cornish trophy which is given annually to the best Canadian player in NCAA football.
“I am currently receiving great medical care”: John Metchie III stated on twitter
The upcoming 2022 2023 season was set to be his first season competing in the NFL. People were saddened by this news as Metchie is a young player and has a lot of potential. His coach at the University of Alabama stated “John has overcome every challenge placed in front of him in his life with toughness and determination, and we are behind him every step of the way in his fight against leukemia”.
Several of his teammates and fans took to twitter to support him in this arduous journey of recovery and believe that his comeback will be stronger than his setback
The Houston Texans have placed Metchie on the non-football illness list. The Texans have considerable depth in the wide receiver department with players like Brandin Cooks, Nico Collins, Phillip Dorsett, Chris Conley and Chris Moore.
The first initial seasons are very important for a rookie in NFL as it determines how your future will play out. With an illness like leukemia, the young receiver’s road is long and hard, but he has fought the odds before and came out on top. I firmly believe he can do it again and make himself proud.
