“It’s chump change for him”: Tom Brady has been fined $11,139 for attempting to kick Grady Jarrett in the groin
Grady Jarrett's sack on Tom Brady
The NFL has been looking into Grady Jarrett’s sack on Tom Brady but not to reverse the controversial ‘roughing the passer’ call that the defensive tackle got but to verify if Tom kicked the defender after he was sacked. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the game against the Atlanta Falcons 21-15 and the highlight of the game was the play Jarrett made against Brady.
The league notified Tom Brady on Friday about the consequences of his play against Grady Jarrett. Initially, the defensive tackle was flagged for unnecessary roughness after he threw Tom to the ground and this did not sit well with the quarterback, who attempted to get back at him by kicking his foot up when Jarrett was still above him.
From the play, it is not clear if Tom’s foot hit the defensive tackle, but the league does not compromise when it comes to plays such as this.
The NFL has fined Tom Brady for striking/kicking/kneeing the defender:
As per the league’s official guidelines, the punishment for kicking, striking, or kneeing any player is punishable with a fine of $11,139. In case it is the first offense and if the player has a history of making such plays, in that case, the fine will go up to $16,444. The amount is insignificant to Tom Brady, who is worth a quarter of a billion dollars. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this first.
It is surprising that the league decided to fine Tom $11,139 and not $16,444 as he has done an act similar to this before. In 2013, Tom Brady attempted to kick Ed Reed, the former safety of the Baltimore Ravens. Head Coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Todd Bowles, plead ignorance when asked about the kick. The HC for the Atlanta Falcons, Arthur Smith refrained from commenting on the NFL fining Tom Brady.
This was the controversial play that brought into question the league’s stance on roughing the passer calls. Officials have been criticized for flagging that play as it was a clean sack executed perfectly by the books. Grady Jarrett did nothing wrong and this play could have given Atlanta an edge over Tampa, as it would have put the ball in their hands when they were down 6 in the final minute of the 4th quarter.
The NFL has had a rough week or two as the referees seem to be exercising an increased amount of caution after Tua Tagovailoa’s injury. Last week, Kansas City Chiefs lineman Chris Jones sacked Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, which led to a forced fumble, but the referees flagged the play because Jones ended up landing on Carr by mistake.
