Rihanna’s stunning performance during the Super Bowl LVII halftime show was an absolute blockbuster, and is still fresh in everyone’s memories. While the Super Bowl is arguably the biggest game in an NFL season, the halftime show also has a certain level of attraction and tease attached to it from the fan’s perspective.
The halftime show, which gained prominence during the 1990s arguably had its most controversial moment in 2004, during Super Bowl XXXVIII. The game featured, the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers, but became more famous due to the infamous Nipplegate incident.
The show which was headlined by Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson shot to fame for all the wrong reasons after the former exposed Jackson’s nipple on stage towards the end of the show. Although the wardrobe malfunction occurred for less than a second, yet it was enough to grab the attention of the whole world.
Tom Brady who led the Patriots to a Super Bowl victory, played in that match and was asked about the controversial incident during his latest appearance on the Let’s Go podcast.
Tom Brady believes the Nipplegate was a shot in the arm for the NFL’s popularity
The 45-year-old opened up on that incident, almost 19 years since it happened saying that it was probably a boon for the NFL’s popularity. Brady, who recently retired from the NFL, also recalled how he was unaware of incident when it happened and only came to know about it after the game.
“[Reporters] were asking me about that, and I couldn’t even understand what they were telling me about,” Brady recalled. “They were like, ‘Did you see the halftime show?’ and I said, ‘Nah, I didn’t see anything.’ I was thinking about the game and was trying to figure out halftime adjustments.”
“It took a while for us to figure out what had gone on. That’s for the fans and not for the players,” he added.
“I think, in the end, it was probably a good thing for the NFL because everyone got to talk about it, and it was just more publicity and more publicity for halftime shows,” Brady said. “Is any publicity bad publicity? That’s what they say. So, who knows?”
The general narrative thrown about regarding the Nipplegate incident is that, it was a pre-planned publicity stunt created to shift the focus from the States’ ongoing war with Iraq.
