“Go read the transcript from the appeal hearing”: When Tom Brady gave the most awkward interview of all time

Tom Brady

Tom Brady is no stranger to the media, the quarterback has given over thousands of interviews to journalists over his career, when he was in New England his interviews were all straight to the point, rarely did he ever slip up or show his emotions. He was following the Patriot way and made sure the responses were all diplomatic. However, there was one time that the quarterback who is known for being a respected professional lost his cool and lashed out.

This interview that Brady gave happened after the Deflategate controversy. The quarterback had recited the same script that he was given for any question relating to it. This has not stopped reporters from repeating their questions in multiple ways to try and extract answers out of athletes by making their tongues slip. This interview with Chuck Klosterman for GQ took place after TB12 served his suspension and went on to record a 9-0 start to the 2015 NFL season.

“It’s going to be a short interview”: Tom Brady threatens to walk out of the interview after the journalist got to his nerves

The GQ’s Men of the Year issue started off great as it put Tom Brady on a pedestal by calling him the ‘Greatest quarterback of all time,’ it also considers the possibility of Brady exploring politics after football though the quarterback has insisted that politics is the last thing that interests him.

This is when things get a little bit awkward, and the interviewer steps into darker territory. He begins to ask him about the deflategate theory. Here’s the transcript for reference.

Chuck: But what you’re suggesting is that the reality of this is subjective. It’s not. Either you were “generally aware” of this or you weren’t.

Brady: I understand what you’re trying to get at. I think that my point is, I’m not adding any more to this debate. I’ve already said a lot about this.

Chuck: Tom, you haven’t. I wouldn’t be asking these questions if you had. There’s still a lack of clarity on this.

Brady: Chuck, go read the transcript from a five-hour appeal hearing. It’s still ongoing.

Chuck: I realize it’s still ongoing. But what is your concern? That by answering this question it will somehow-

Brady: I’ve already answered all those questions. I don’t want to keep revisiting what’s happened over the last eight months. Whether it’s you, whether it’s my parents, whether it’s anybody else. If that’s what you want to talk about, then it’s going to be a very short interview.

The remainder of the interview saw similar questions just framed in a different way. It comes as no surprise that there was some tension between the quarterback and the journalist as the conversation was awkward and straight to the point, Tom closed off after that point.

Klosterman took a chance with Brady by asking him a line of questioning relating to the scandal, thousands of other reporters had failed at getting an answer out of Tom but Chuck assumed that if Brady is grilled in person and on live TV, there was a better chance that he would spill.

That interview ended up being pointless as it yielded nothing new or fruitful that we did not already know about Tom and Deflategate. Good try Chuck but probably best to not pester the GOAT or he might include your name in his list.
