The Buffalo Bills’ blowout of the Pittsburgh Steelers wasn’t a surprise. They were clearly the better team entering the game on Monday. However, what surprised a lot of people was analyst Tony Romo‘s excitement when he thought the Bills picked off the Steelers’ QB Mason Rudolph.
The play in question happened late in the first quarter with the Bills leading the game 14-0. Rudolph’s pass to receiver George Pickens was tipped by a Bill before being scooped up by Micah Hyde who ran with it into the endzone.
Romo thought it was an interception and was clearly excited by the thought of it. Even fellow announcer Jim Nantz acknowledged that and told the viewers that Romo was “jumping up and down.”
However, replays confirmed that the ball bounced on the ground before ending up in Hyde’s hands. Romo did not know that and was to see the play unfold. Fans on social media called out Romo’s bias towards the Bills after the play.
The former Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback played 14 seasons in the NFL and became an analyst after retirement. He joined CBS Sports to become the lead color analyst for their NFL telecasts. Romo is often paired with Jim Nantz during the games.
Fans accuse Tony Romo of biased commentary during the Bills-Steelers game
The Buffalo Bills-Pittsburgh Steelers game on Monday was announced by the duo of Jim Nantz and Tony Romo. It was a blowout win for the Bills as Josh Allen and company tore the Steelers apart and won the game 31-17. However, more than the players, analyst Romo generated a lot of buzz on social media.
During the first quarter, the former Dallas Cowboys‘ quarterback expressed his excitement when he thought the Bills’ safety Micah Hyde had intercepted a ball and returned it for a touchdown. However, replays showed that the ball had bounced on the ground before the safety took it to the endzone. Even Nantz confirmed Romo’s excitement during the call.
Fans on social media though, slammed the CBS Sports‘ analyst for his happiness and accused him of being biased towards the Bills. One fan wrote, “Romo has literally lost the ability to call these games unbiasedly.” Others called for CBS to get rid of Romo and sign another former NFL player-turned-analyst Greg Olsen. Here are some of the reactions.
The Nantz-Romo duo will be on call next Sunday for the Bills’ Divisional Round game against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Highmark Stadium. It will be Patrick Mahomes‘ first road playoff game of his career.
