“We have moved on”: Jimmy Garoppolo OUT as the 49ers QB1, Trey Lance officially declared as the starting QB

Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo

It is the end of an era in San Francisco, the 49ers earlier announced in their training camp press conference that they will be moving on from veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and move on to Trey Lance. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced the team’s decision to move on from Jimmy G and thanked him for his services, ending months of speculation regarding the next QB1 in the bay.

Lance has been impressing his coaches and all of his teammates the entire off-season. Even reputed vets such as George Kittle and Mohammad Sanu commended Lance over his throwing abilities and his ability to learn and pick up fast. His professionalism and commitment to the sport added to the energy he brings to the field are something Jimmy G could never get. He was always a quarterback but not a leader.

“Jimmy would have been traded if the surgery didn’t happen”: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan knew from the start of the offseason that Trey Lance will be the team’s new QB1

It is now Trey Lance’s time to shine in San Francisco

In light of the team’s decision to go with Lance, here’s what Head Coach Kyle Shanahan had to say about the team’s decision. “Jimmy understands where we’re at, I can’t tell you how appreciative I’ve been of Jimmy and him being here. I appreciate what he did for us last year. He did a hell of a job coming into camp and winning that job and taking us to the Super Bowl(referring to Super Bowl LIV year),” he applauds the quarterback for everything he has done and acknowledges that though the path was rough especially the year that he came into San Francisco, Jimmy G endured it all and led to them the Super Bowl.

He goes on to announce that Trey Lance will be starting off this year and will be the team’s quarterback moving forward. “We have moved on to Trey and we are starting camp out this way. We think Jimmy would have been traded if the surgery didn’t happen. It did, he needed to do it so there’s now woe there at all but it’s good to see that he is healthy,” he concludes.

Clearly, the quarterback and the team knew the second the season ended that this is it. With all the speculation and the rumors generated in the offseason, it was clear to Jimmy G that he will have to find a new place to go. Looking at the quarterback situation across the league now, there are multiple teams that could use Jimmy G’s skillset. He is no doubt a starter but the next chance that he will get as a starter will probably be his last if he is unable to perform at a high level.
