‘Fall from grace,’ 49ers first-round pick Trey Lance STRONGLY expected to share the QB spot with Sam Darnold amidst Brock Purdy’s elbow recovery

Trey Lance was drafted by the 49ers in 2021 as their starting QB. HC Kyle Shanahan had shown lot of faith in the young QBs abilities and even named him a starter last season.
However, constant injury woes has led him to fight for a backup place in the organization. The QB had a massive fall from grace where he was expected to be the No.1 QB for the 49ers throughout their recent future, but is now fighting for a backup spot with the new signing Sam Darnold.
With starting QB Brock Purdy hurt, the focus is one Lance and Darnold who will be sharing the No.1 QB spot as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ recovers from his elbow injury.
“But right now because he is hurt, it is nice to focus on Trey, it is nice to focus on Sam (Darnold), and see how they do in OTAs and most likely see how they’re playing leading us into training camp because I think it will take some time for Brock.” Kyle Shanahan stated in Phoenix, Arizona.
The 49ers were strongly commited to promote Trey Lance as their starting QB, however, a lot has changed in a year. QB Jimmy Garoppolo has left for the Raiders and the starting spot is firmly reserved by Brock Purdy.
Trey Lance can still secure the No. 1 QB spot for himself
With Brock Purdy currently out due to an elbow injury, Trey Lance has a massive opportunity to take back the starting spot for himself. The 22-year old QB had little to no chance to prove his worth in San Francisco. In his first season, he was a rookie behind Jimmy G, and in his second season he was struggling with injury.
“With Brock being hurt, it does open (the job) up, and it does give him a chance,” Shanahan told reporters Tuesday in Phoenix, at the NFL’s annual meeting. “I don’t know how Brock’s going to come back. I don’t know exactly when he’s going to come back, so I don’t have the exact answer for that.”
The 49ers HC believes that Lance has a great opportunity to compete for the starting spot and make it his own. However, he will have to do that with the former Panthers QB Sam Darnold.
The San-Francisco based team have three quality QBs currently who can fit into many of the NFL teams. However, only one QB can start, and with Purdy injured, the opportunity is massive for Trey Lance now.
