“Worst downfall of Super Bowl champions” – NFL Twitter expresses its disappointment in Baker Mayfield joining the Rams off waivers

The Los Angeles Rams have announced that they have claimed quarterback Baker Mayfield off waivers on Tuesday after the Carolina Panthers released him a couple of days ago. After a mutual agreement, the Panthers, in tandem with interim coach Steve Wilks, decided to waive Mayfield, and soon enough, the quarterback was under the radar of many teams.

After the San Francisco 49ers’ star quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out of the season due to a foot fracture, talks of Mayfield joining the 49ers started making ground. The Panthers waived Mayfield after the team decided that he wouldn’t be the starting quarterback or backup in Carolina going forward in the season. As things stand, the Rams, who look terrible this season, will inherit $1.35 million on Mayfield’s contract.

Interestingly, according to sources, the Rams were the only team to place a waiver claim on Mayfield. This dismisses all claims that the Rams have brought Mayfield on board to stop him from going to divisional rivals, the 49ers. Currently, the 49ers with an 8-4 record for the season are the division leaders of the NFC West while the Rams are 3-9 for the season and sit at the bottom of the table.

Mayfield is expected to join the Rams at the earliest and could start for them as early as in the Rams’ next game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night.

NFL fans weren’t particularly happy with Mayfield joining the Rams. Fans assumed that the Rams have only waived him off to save their already doomed season and reacted in a negative manner to the news.

In order to improve their abysmal 3-9 record, the Rams, led by Mayfield, will face the Raiders this week and will then take on the Packers next. On Christmas, they will face the Broncos on home soil.
