“Straight RACISTS” – NFL Twitter Fumes as Houston Texans continue tradition of firing Black HC with Lovie Smith exit
Did racial discrimination have something to do with Lovie Smith's firing or was it purely done on a result basis?
The Houston Texans have finally had enough of Lovie Smith. After an utterly disappointing season, the Texans have fired Lovie Smith despite a final week victory against the Indianapolis Colts.
Smith became the second coach to be dismissed after a one-year spell at the franchise. In 2021, David Culley met a similar end following a 13-4 record.
This time the Texans managed to better their losing record ending up 3-13-1. All of that has culminated in Smith being fired, becoming the second head coach to be fired in consecutive seasons.

This ruthless approach from the Texans’ management has prompted some serious questions from fans, with some of them alluding to a hint of racism involved in such decisions. The theory can not be dismissed completely as Smith’s hiring too happened out of the blue in 2022.
The Texans had pinned down a couple of names in the form of Josh McCown and Brian Flores as the front runners for the job. However, things took a drastic turn after Flores filed a suit against the NFL based on racial discrimination. Following that, Lovie Smith came into the fray and was hired almost instantaneously. It was believed that Flores lost the job due to his lawsuit against the league.
The Texans lost 9 games in a row before winning their final Week 18 encounter against the Colts. The victory also came at a cost for the Texans as they lost the first pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
“I appreciate Coach Smith and his entire family for their contributions over the last two seasons,” Texans CEO and Chairman Cal McNair said of Lovie Smith’s firing. “We are grateful for his leadership and character, and we wish him the best moving forward.”
“While we understand the results have not been what we had hoped for, we are committed to building a program that produces long-term, sustainable success. Our fans and city deserve a team that they can be proud of. I will work alongside Nick Caserio throughout this process and I’m confident we will find the right leader for our football team.”
