When Baker Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers we were expecting some great few months ahead as, Quarterback competition have been in the NFL since time immemorial and the world has been witness to some great QB contests like- Phillip Rivers vs Drew Brees, few remember when these 2 greats went head to head for the then San Diego Charger QB1 position.
Jeff Hostetler vs. Phil Simms- Before Kurt Warner vs Eli Manning, Hostetler vs Simms was the original Giants QB battle. Steve Young vs. Joe Montana- How you win 5 Super bowls, you have two future hall of fame Quarterbacks battle it out for top dog position.
Darnold blows Baker Mayfield out of water
As the above tweet by Dov Kleiman shows it doesn’t look like Baker is proving to be much of a competition for Darnold as according to Kleiman stats of both players were as follows- Darnold: 11-of-14 passing, 5 TDs, 0 INT versus Baker: 9-of-16 passing, 0 TDs, 1 INT
The above stats are not encouraging for Baker who was traded out of Cleveland after a tumultuous last season and when Cleveland decided to upgrade with controversial Deshaun Watson.
Darnold who was brought in last season from New York Jets and Mayfield both are expected to give this battle, all that they’ve got because losing the starter position here may make the career backups.
Mayfield was an early favorite to be the starter for many like Panthers beat writer Sheena Quick who on her recent appearance on the Pat McAfee show stated that “Baker’s your starter.” After what happened on the training at Day 1, here’s how Twitter reacted:
