The free-agency quarterback market is becoming very thin as some of the top-tier quarterbacks have already agreed to terms on a new contract with their new teams. In that trend, the Las Vegas Raiders have roped in the former 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo on a 3-year deal per multiple reports. This trade makes sense for the Raiders since Jimmy G would be reuniting with his former Patriots coach Josh McDaniels in Vegas.
The Raiders have been pursuing the former 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo since they moved on from their former franchise quarterback Derek Carr. Carr waived his no-trade clause last month and ended up signing with the New Orleans Saints on a 4-year 160 million dollar contract. The Las Vegas-based franchise is reportedly giving Garoppolo a 3-year $67.5 million deal, including $34 million in guaranteed money.
Garoppolo, who spent the last six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, has proven he’s a solid quarterback but has failed to perform during clutch situations. Hopefully, it won’t be the same case in Vegas. Last season, Garoppolo started as a backup quarterback behind Trey Lance but ended up taking over the starting QB job when Lance went down with an injury during week 2 of 2022 the regular season.
The 6’2″ quarterback did a remarkable job as the first-string QB, which led the 49ers to a 7-3 record in the games he started. Moreover, Garoppolo threw for 2,437 yards and 16 interceptions before he suffered a foot injury in the week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins. And now, he’ll get another chance to prove himself in Sin City.
Social media reacts to Josh McDaniels & Jimmy Garoppolo reunion
Lots of fans on social media, especially the Raiders fans, did not like the idea of bringing in Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback. Moreover, some fans believe Josh McDaniels only signed Jimmy G due to their Patriots connection. But some people believe that their previous experience working together could work out in favor of the Raiders.
The duo worked together from 2014 to 2016 when Jimmy Garoppolo was playing for the Patriots as a backup quarterback behind Tom Brady. McDaniels at that time was working as the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach for the New England-based football team. And now, social media believes that the Patriots’ connection is the main reason for this signing.
Nevertheless, Jimmy G is a great starting QB and certainly has the potential to turn the Raiders into a playoff team. So in hindsight, the Raiders did a great move by acquiring him. Now they just have to find a decent backup quarterback since their second-string QB Jarrett Stidham, who started for them in their last 2 games signed with the Denver Broncos on Monday.
