“Pro Bowl has become UNWATCHABLE,” Twitter Reacts to rumours of the NFL scraping Pro Bowl fixture following lowest viewership in 16 years

The NFL has started pondering over the idea of completely doing away with the Pro Bowl fixture, cometh the new season. The marquee fixture, sees the season’s best players being pitted against each other, except for players from the Super Bowl entrants.

However, for years, the Pro Bowl has failed to live up to its expectations and has seen a rapid decrease in viewership numbers, which has eventually meant a lower revenue for the league. The 2022 Pro Bowl fixture was the worst in terms of viewership, as it recorded the lowest in the last 16 years.

The historic Pro Bowl may have been played out for the last time

Only 6.7 million people viewed the game, a number which is very low given the NFL’s popularity in the US and all over the world. The fixture usually also sees a stark contrast in the intensity at which the match is played, given that players have nothing much to win from it, but a great deal to lose in terms of personal fitness.

All of these reasons have brought about a conversation regarding its future and the NFL has started looking at alternative solutions. A flag football game might be played out, according to Ian Rapoport.

“I think the conclusion [of discussions] was that the game itself doesn’t work,” Roger Goodell said Tuesday. “And we need to find another way to celebrate our players.”

“Celebrate the fact that these are our Pro Bowler players, the best players in our league, and give them an opportunity to celebrate that with our fans. We talked an awful lot about some of the events around the Pro Bowl are really extremely popular, whether it’s the quarterback challenge or some of the other events, so those are things that we’ll probably build on.”
