Monday, January 2, 2023, will forever be marked as a dark day in the history of the NFL. The entire world saw the tragic and spine-chilling accident of the Buffalo Bills’ safety, Damar Hamlin.

The young safety suffered a cardiac arrest on the field after he tackled Bengals WR Tee Higgins. After the tackle, Hamlin stood up on his feet quickly, but lost his balance and fell to the ground.

The medics rushed to the field and tended to Damar Hamlin, who was lying unconscious. He had a pulse but couldn’t breathe on his own and was administered CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation). The medical professionals worked on Hamlin for 16 minutes on the field, after which he was driven to the UC Medical Center.

After witnessing the horrific accident of Damar Hamlin in the first quarter of the game, the NFL temporarily stopped the play. However, the players from both sides took a stand and weren’t in the right mental space after witnessing the condition of one of their brothers and left the field after the ambulance drove off the field. The NFL then suspended the game.

The league has now issued a statement and said that the Bills-Bengals game will not resume this week. “The NFL continues to be in regular contact with the medical team caring for Damar Hamlin, and also the Bills and Bengals organizations and the NFL Players Association. After speaking with both teams and NFLPA leadership, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed the clubs today that the Bills-Bengals game will not be resumed this week. The NFL has made no decision regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date.”

The league has also announced that there are no changes made to the Week 18 schedule and games will take place as planned. The final week of the regular season will kick off with the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders faceoff along with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans fighting for the AFC South title.

The Bills and Bengals will also play their last game of the regular season. The Bills will take on the New England Patriots at home and the Baltimore Ravens will travel to Cincinnati. The final game of the season was initially supposed to be the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions, but it now looks like the Bengals and Bills’ unfinished game will be the last of the 2022-2023 season.
