Raymell Mourice Rice is a name to reckon with in the world of the NFL. The former running back played for the Baltimore Ravens for six seasons in the NFL and delivered impressive performances at many instances. He was roped in by the Ravens back in 2008 after he grabbed quite a few eyeballs during his college football days at Rutgers.
Named to three Pro Bowls and part of the Super Bowl title-winning team in 2012, Rice, during his career, created innumerable records. However, the man is also known for getting himself involved in a massive controversy.
“I regretted my role in the incident”: Ray Rice’s wife Janay
Back in Feb, 2014, Ray and his fiancee Janay (now wife) were arrested on the charge of assault after they ended up having a physical altercation in a hotel in New Jersey. After violently shouting at one another, Rice followed Janay to an elevator where the NFL player reportedly spit on his fiancee after which she ended up hitting him.
In an exclusive interaction with Jemele Hill of ESPN, Janay had narrated what happened during the day of altercation. “I regretted my role in the incident. I know some people disagreed with me publicly apologizing. I’m not saying that what Ray did wasn’t wrong. He and I both know it was wrong.”
Janay had apologized publicly for hitting her fiancee and she stood by her words even after facing backlash from many. “As we were arguing, he was on his phone and not looking at me. I went to reach for his phone, and when he grabbed it back, he spit at me and I slapped him. We got into the elevator and what happened inside is still foggy to me. The only thing I know and I can’t even say I “remember” because I only know from what Ray has told me is that I slapped him again and then he hit me. I remember nothing else from inside the elevator.“
After the incident, the couple ended up reconciling and eventually tied the knot. As expected, many people were unhappy with the couple still getting married after the assault incident. Reflecting on that, Janay had said, “I didn’t understand why that was suspicious to some people. We’d been together seven years and had been engaged for two. What happened that night wasn’t going to change the fact that we were going to get married.“
Thankfully, the couple got together and things have been going on well for the two. However, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the incident did tarnish the image of the power couple.
