Quarterback is one of the most important positions in football and also the most difficult one to succeed at. A first-overall pick can be a bust and the 199th pick can go on to become the greatest of all time. Still, if any player is lucky enough to get the chance to be at the biggest stage at the QB position, he simply doesn’t walk away from that opportunity. However, there is an exception to every rule and the exception here is Andrew Luck.
Andrew Luck was selected first overall by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck’s rookie year performance proved why he was drafted first overall. He threw for 4,374 yards which is an NFL record for the most yards thrown by a rookie in a single season. The Colts had a 2-14 record the year before selecting Luck who changed the face of the franchise and led them to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance.
In the seven years Andrew Luck spent in the league, he had an 89.5 passer rating and a career record of 53-33. He was nominated to the Pro Bowl four times and won the 2018 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Despite being in his prime and on the trajectory of becoming a great quarterback and winning the Super Bowl, Luck decided to give it all up and retire.
He is more details on why Andrew Luck retired and what he is currently doing.
Why did Andrew Luck retire?
Andrew Luck announced his retirement from the NFL in 2019 after playing for seven years. During his retirement announcement, Luck said, “This is not an easy decision. Honestly it’s the hardest decision of my life. But it is the right decision for me. For the last four years or so I’ve been in this cycle of injury, pain, rehab; injury, pain, rehab. And it’s been unceasing and unrelenting both in-season and offseason. I felt stuck in it. The only way I see out is to no longer play football. It’s taken my joy of this game away. I’ve been stuck in this process.”
The 33-year-old suffered a lot of injuries in his professional career. Luck had a lingering problem in his throwing arm since 2015 and he finally went under surgery after the end of the 2016 season. He was in recovery for the entirety of the 2017 offseason and he did not practice at all. It was later announced by the Colts that he will be missing the entire season. After returning in 2018, he won the Comeback Player of the Year and took the Colts to the divisional playoffs but lost the matchup.
In December 2022, Andrew Luck had a detailed conversation with ESPN’s Seth Wickersham during which he revealed that being a quarterback of the NFL was a herculean task. He said that focusing on becoming a great quarterback, he neglected his duties toward his family and his wife. So, ultimately the decision came down to choosing between his marriage and football and Luck chose the former.
