“Where’s the help on defence” Steelers Cam Heyward is furious with the NFL for less protection for defensive players
Cam Heyward
The NFL is a high-contact sport but there are some rules and regulations that need to be followed to minimize injuries. Cam Heyward recently criticized the league for their neglect of the defensive players in the NFL.
T.J. Watts plays as a linebacker for the Steelers and recently he suffered a knee injury due to a low block tackle from T.J. Hockenson in their preseason game against the Detroit Lions. The same incident happened with Bengals Kayvon Thibodeaux who suffered a low block from Thaddeus Moss resulting in a two-week injury for him.
Cam Heyward argued that both the tackles were legal and there was nothing wrong with them but the NFL needs to take notice of that and put some regulations in place to stop further injuries.
“We’ve done a lot for the offensive players. Where’s the help on defense?” Heyward asked. Though it is likely that there are more safety and security when it comes to offensive players whereas the defensive players are the ones who are engaged in more tackles and physicality.
What can the NFL do about it
Currently, NFL can’t do anything about the situation as the new season has already started and Cam Heyward will have to wait till 2023 to see any changes.
Watts’s injury is not serious and the Steelers head coach stated that if it was a regular season game then Watts would have likely returned for the next game. Though the team has not released an official statement yet regarding the injury.
NFL has the reputation as the most physical sport in the world where almost every single player suffers a serious injury once in their career. So, the league should put some new rules in place to counter this situation as human health is way more important than playing a sport.
