The much-anticipated game between two undefeated teams did not disappoint as the DC Defenders handed the St. Louis BattleHawks their first loss of the XFL season in a high-scoring slugfest on Sunday. However, the brawl after the game became the talking point among XFL fans and sports media.
During the final minutes of the game, the BattleHawks opted to attempt a 4th and 15 rather than going for an onside kick to retain possession of the football. However, the Defenders’ defensive lineman Davin Bellamy managed to sack the BattleHawks quarterback A.J. McCarron for a seven yards loss which sealed the victory for the Washington-based XFL franchise.
But just as the players were going to their sidelines after the sack, a scuffle broke out, which immediately turned into a huge bench-clearing brawl. The officials tried their best to keep the players on their sidelines to control the situation, but the players were involved in a massive all-out brawl on national television. And then, the coaches and the officials had to involve to diffuse the heated affair.
As a result of the incident, the XFL officials ejected two DC players and one St. Louis player for participating in the brawl. And then, the Defenders had to run out the clock with the ball in their possession after the incident. Both team’s players were still high on emotions, but the Defenders managed to run out the clock and secure the win against the BattleHawks.
BattleHawks QB AJ McCarron expresses his displeasure over officiating

The St. Louis BattleHawks led by their star quarterback AJ McCarron suffered a loss against the DC Defenders despite the QB’s four-touchdown performance in a game that ended in an ugly brawl. Furthermore, after the game, the star QB also expressed his displeasure with the XFL officiating. “The league’s got to figure out a way to get some of these calls right,” McCarron said.
McCarron continued, “We had three to four times in the game when the refs came back to us and said, ‘We missed that call’ and apologized – straight-up apologized. And it was times where you can’t miss those calls.”
AJ McCarron was a star signal-caller in Alabama, which led him to get drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Furthermore, he went on to play for the Houston Texans and Las Vegas Raiders before he decided to jump ship to play in the XFL.
