Well, it seems Zach Wilson is back in the New York Jets as the starting quarterback for the upcoming game in week 14. The quarterback, who was benched for two games after struggling in place of the injured Aaron Rodgers, has finally made his way back under the center as he starts on Sunday, in the home game against the Houston Texans.
While addressing the media, head coach Robert Saleh sounded positive for Wilson’s return as he is hopeful the QB would give them the “best chance to win,” while they would give “him another opportunity to go prove that.”
In addition to Wilson, a few more new faces will be seen in Sunday’s game. New York waived Tim Boyle after two ineffective games and made Trevor Siemian the backup. They also signed Brett Rypien as the emergency QB, from the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad.
The Jets’ decision to bring back Wilson was anticipated previously, as multiple sources at the Athletic confirmed the team was leaning towards that decision, however, the quarterback was reluctant. Contrary to that, Jets HC confirmed Wilson was “fired up” when he got to know about the news.
Saleh added:
We always believed he was the best QB in terms of giving us the chance to win.
When asked whether or not Wilson would continue this position for the remaining 2023 NFL season, he replied with “God willing.” The Jets, who are standing at 4-8 seemed to record their 13th year of playoff drought, though they are hopeful that this season would end better.
Do the Jets have a winning chance with QB Zach Wilson?
This isn’t the first time that third-year quarterback Wilson is returning as the starting QB after being benched for some time. It happened before last season, but it didn’t go as New York planned it would.
Last season, when Mike White injured his ribs, the Jets called back their savior Wilson. He played two games until he was benched again as the Jets proceeded with practice squad quarterback Chris Streveler. At that time, Wilson lost his confidence, and his teammates were showing off Mike White’s shirts after Wilson was benched again.
Therefore, it would be interesting to see whether Wilson will stand by coach Saleh’s words or not. Though it was a bit surprising to see the head coach calling Wilson “best chance to win” while they demoted him to third string. But considering the Jets’ current position, it’s not wrong if they are tossing all their coins in.
