Zay Flowers gets levied with a hefty $10,927 fine for his controversial taunting penalty against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game

The NFL 2023-24 season witnessed a stream of controversial referring decisions. The trend continued in the postseason as well. It happened in the AFC Championship game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs game. The Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers received a hefty amount( $10,927) fine for his taunting penalty against the Kansas City Chiefs.

It all started with a 54-yard drive from Lamar Jackson. L’Jarius Sneed tackled flowers. The latter was holding the leg of the wide receiver when Flowers flipped the ball and stood over Sneed. Now, this attracted a taunting penalty from the wide receiver, and he received a hefty fine.

The penalty cost the Ravens 15 yards in the AFC Championship game. However, the $10,000 fine came a bit later. Despite dominating teams in the regular season, the momentum did not help the Ravens to get past the Chiefs. Most NFL fans would not like the hefty fine as they believe taunting should be part of the game due to the adrenaline rush that the players experience.

Flowers is not the only one who received a taunting penalty decision. In the same game, Travis Jones was also subjected to a fine. He made a brutal hit on the Chiefs’ quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and was fined $6,700. These two incidents caught the eyes of the NFL world.

Aside Zay Flowers incident, NFL officiating attracted controversies in the regular season

The NFL regular season attracted a lot of controversies for the poor calls by the referees. One could argue that the officials have become an enemy of the people.

It started with him, and later, several players complained about the poor officiating from the referees. Some complained about not calling fouls on time, while some pointed fingers at hefty fines.

Nonetheless, the controversies continued in the postseason as well. Poor officiating has become a problem in the NFL. Each week during the regular season, fans regularly complain about it. The AFC Championship game taunting penalty also made the fanbase angry. It remains to be seen if the Super Bowl game will have some bad officiating.
