Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr. has always found a way to make sure he’s in the spotlight since exploding onto the scene in the NFL in 2014. In the early days, his spectacular one-handed catches and play on the field would always keep him in the headlines. Since his blockbuster trade to the Cleveland Browns, he would start to be noticed more for what he was wearing during the pregame warmups, most notably, wearing a RM 56-01 watch which is worth $1.95 million.

On Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, he very proudly showed off CryptoPunk #3365 (an NFT) that he bought for $2.17 million in August of 2021. This action may trigger a fine from the NFL but as we’ve seen in the past, those normally don’t bother him too much. The pregame antics were mainly picked up in Cleveland where he may have been using it for publicity as he was in a less marketable city with what at the time was an inferior team but now being in Los Angeles with a true contender, it’s clear to see his actions are simply what he wants to do.

Odell Beckham Jr. is paid in Bitcoin

When the star receiver hit the open market and signed with the Rams, that the story alone would grab the headlines but this being OBJ, he gave the reporters more to write about. He announced that his $1.25 million salary would be paid in only Bitcoin. His incentives mean that he can earn up to $3 million this season that will also be paid in Bitcoin. A common belief around the world is that digital platforms are the direction finance is moving in and OBJ is not passing up any opportunity to take advantage of that.

Since his move to the Rams, OBJ has caught 27 passes for 305 yards and 5 touchdowns in 8 games. While that does average out to 38.1 yards per game it’s worth noting that most of the targets on the Rams go to Cooper Kupp who had himself an unbelievable season. With most of the attention going to that side of the field it’ll be interesting to see if OBJ can use his star ability to burn defenses that may slightly ‘forget’ about him on the field in the playoffs.
