“End of an era,” Seattle Seahawks release veteran defensive captain Bobby Wagner hours after Russell Wilson trade
The Seattle Seahawks are undergoing a major changeover ahead of the next season. Right after their veteran quarterback, Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos, they are now letting go of Bobby Wagner on the same day.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the franchise have already informed the veteran defensive linebacker of their intentions. The move has caused as much shock, as the earlier trade of Wilson to the Broncos.
Bobby Wagner’s ouster marked a complete overhaul of the Super Bowl XLVIII winning Seattle Seahawks squad
Whilst the move marks the end of an eraz one could see where the Seahawks are coming from to make a crucial decision like this. Realeasing Bobby Wagner would help them save $16.6 million against the cap. Wagner is the all time defensive leader of the Super Bowl, but question marks over his future had started ever since their poor season last season.
The Seahawks failed to reach the playoffs which led to numerous changes in the backroom staff. Wagner, who was taken on the second day of the 2012 draft alongside Russell Wilson, was one of the last remaining players of the “Legion of Boom” defenders that helped the Seahawks win Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014 and appear in the Super Bowl XLIX.
The release of Bobby Wagner means that every member from the Super Bowl XLVIII side has now been shown the door as they look to emulate their success from the previous decade with the philosophy of youth of experience.
It is often said that great players are those who have an idea of when they’re time is up at a particular place. The defensive linebacker was unsure of his future and had hinted at a possible change in the upcoming season.
“You think about it,” Wagner, 31, said ahead of his final match for the Seahawks against the Detroit Lions.
“You think about what the next year looks like, and just, period, what the future holds because this was a season that I don’t think we all planned for. We didn’t plan for the season to go this way (a 7-10 record). And so obviously there’s going to be some changes.”
