Shocker! Miami Dolphins fire head coach Brian Flores, first of 3 firings in one day
Matt Nagy Mike Zimmer Brian Flores
The NFL regular season has ended and teams are already making personnel changes. 3 head coaches were fired today alone. Chicago moves on from Matt Nagy, Minnesota parted ways with Mike Zimmer and a bit of a shocker, Miami fired Brian Flores. The 2022 head coaching carousel expected to see some heads fall but now with the addition of Brian Flores into the mix, we could see more unexpected movement in the coming days. Only time will tell but for now we can analyze the position of the 3 teams that made their changes today.
Matt Nagy finally fired
There will be a large number of people in Chicago that will say that Matt Nagy should’ve been fired a couple weeks ago. The NFL allows a period of interviews to happen before the close of the season that Chicago did not take advantage of because they decided to keep Nagy around till now. It may not mean much but when it’s clear you’re moving on from your coach, it’s tough to see why they wouldn’t want to get a step ahead with a potential candidate. Nagy finishes his 4th season in Chicago with an unimpressive 6-11 record.

It was always going to be a difficult season but there was certainly more expected of the Bears this season. When you draft a quarterback in the first round nowadays you expect them to play right from the start let alone when he’s picked number 11 overall. Nagy’s early season uncertainly between Justin Fields and Andy Dalton was almost comical at the time. When he eventually decided that Fields would be the starter things didn’t get much better either. Since his 2018 success, his record is 20-27. Chicago has the option to look at some potential offensive coordinators to replace Nagy but it’s likely they’ll look for a more experienced person in the role this time around.
Minnesota moves on from Mike Zimmer
Mike Zimmer getting fired was certainly less expected than Matt Nagy but still something people may have seen coming. While overall he’s had a successful 8 year tenure with the Vikings, since a 2017 NFC championship appearance the team has gone 33-31 and has failed to make the playoffs since. This years 8-9 finish represents another underwhelming season where the star talent is present on offense but once again the defense was simply too poor. In 2020 Minnesota’s defense was ranked 27th overall and in 2021 it dropped to 30th. Someone they could be looking for to fix their defensive woes is who Miami fired today as well.
Dolphins shock the league by firing Brian Flores
Brian Flores got fired today. Yes you read that right. Of all the coaching moves expected to happen, this was nowhere near the top. In his 3 season with the Dolphins the team never made the playoffs and overall they had a record of 24-25. But this was a team that never was going to be extremely successful.
This year alone the struggles at quarterback play and offensive line we’re enough to prove that Flores was overachieving by finishing 9-8 after starting 1-7. Whoever is hired next is going to inherit the same roster issues and they may not have the same defensive scheming ability as Flores. With the firing, Flores jumps to the top of the list for every team looking for a head coach now. The record may not look fantastic but Flores is certainly worth the hype.
A crazy and confusing day in the NFL but such is the nature of the off-season and personnel changes around the league. It’s possible that today’s moves could trigger some more unexpected changes league wide.
