The NFL has a rich history of over 100 years. Over this period, there have been multiple champions, and a lot of teams have been erased from existence and have been replaced by new teams. The Super Bowl is relatively recent as it started in 1967. With just a week left for Super Bowl LVIII, a game in which the Kansas City Chiefs have a chance at becoming back-to-back champions by beating the San Francisco 49ers.

In league history, there have been just seven teams that have ever managed to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Surprisingly, this feat has been achieved just eight times which is a testament to how difficult it is to win two consecutive rings in the NFL. The teams which have managed to etch their names in history are the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and the New England Patriots.

It will be interesting to note that the Pittsburgh Steelers achieved this feat twice! In league history, teams have managed to win two consecutive Super Bowls but never three in a row. The closest that a team came to going on a three-peat in football was in between 2001 and 2004 when the New England Patriots won three rings in four years. Another notable mention would be the Dallas Cowboys who won three rings in four years between 1992 and 1995.

List of NFL teams that have gone back-to-back in the Super Bowl

Here’s a detailed list of some of the greatest teams in NFL history that have managed to win back-to-back rings.

1. Green Bay Packers (1967 & 1968)

The first Super Bowl was played in 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in LA, California. The big game witnessed a faceoff between the AFL-NFL teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. The path of the Chiefs to the finals was eerily similar to that of this year. The team went 11-2-1 in the regular season and beat the Buffalo Bills in order to qualify.

The Packers were led by the legendary Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr as the QB. The game ended with the Chiefs losing 35-10.

In the subsequent year, Vince Lombardi led the Packers to yet another Super Bowl appearance and this time, they faced off against the Oakland Raiders. This time, the game took place at the Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami, Florida and the game ended with the Packers winning 33-14. Since then, the team has won just two Super Bowls in 1997 and 2011.

2. Miami Dolphins (1972 & 1973)

This was the true Golden age of football for the Dolphins. The team which has not been in the Super Bowl for almost 40 years once won back-to-back rings under one of the greatest head coaches of all time in the NFL, Don Shula.

The Miami Dolphins had a historic run in the regular season as they went undefeated in the regular season. The team played against the Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Commanders) in Super Bowl VII. The game went down as one of the lowest-scoring championship games as the final score was 14-7 in favor of the Dolphins. What was remarkable about this game was that the winners managed to stay in the lead despite being completely shut out in the second half of the game.

Super Bowl VIII was a show of the sheer dominance of Miami. It was played against the Minnesota Vikings who were limited to just 7 points as the Dolphins dropped 24 on them. With this, the Dolphins managed to win back-to-back NFL championships.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers (1975 & 1976)

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team on this list that have managed to win consecutive championships on two separate occasions. The first time they managed to do it was in 1975 in Super Bowl IX when they played against the Minnesota Vikings and beat them 16-6. It was the first time that the Steelers had won a Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh was led by Terry Bradshaw, one of the most iconic QBs of all time for the team. In Super Bowl X, the Steelers beat the Dallas Cowboys 21-17. America’s team was led by Tom Landry but it was the duo of Chuck Noll and Terry Bradshaw that had the last laugh.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers (1979 & 1980)

The Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll pairing took the Steelers back to the Super Bowl once again in 1979. It was a repeat of the 1976 finals as yet again, they faced off against the Dallas Cowboys led by Tom Landry. The outcome was similar to their previous meeting as yet again, the Steelers had the last laugh as they won 35-31. Terry Bradshaw was the MVP of this game.

In Super Bowl XIV, the Steelers faced off against the Los Angeles Rams and beat them 31-19. By doing this, they became the first franchise in NFL history to win four Super Bowls.

5. San Francisco 49ers (1989 & 1990)

There’s no way a true football fan would not know about the team of the 1980s. The San Francisco 49ers were led by Joe Montana, with Jerry Rice and led by Bill Walsh. They were the Avengers before the Avengers were a thing. This team went on to win four titles in nine years. They managed to go back-to-back in 1989 and 1990.

In Super Bowl XXIII, the San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16 and Jerry Rice won the SB MVP award. The following year, the 49ers beat the Denver Broncos, it was an absolute obliteration as the final score was 55-10. To date, no championship game has ever been this lopsided in league history.

6. Dallas Cowboys (1993 & 1994)

If you are a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, this is bound to bring tears to your eyes. The 90s were truly the decade of America’s team. Super Bowl XXVII was the third time the team won the championship in team history, the game was played against the Buffalo Bills. Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman led the Cowboys to a dominant 52-17 victory.

This is the only time in Super Bowl history that a team beat the same opponent twice in a row to win the championship. Once again, the Dallas Cowboys faced off against the Buffalo Bills. This time as well, the outcome was the same, America’s team beat the Bills 30-13.

This was the prime of the Cowboys as the team dominated every team they played against.

7. Denver Broncos (1998 & 1999)

These were the years Broncos Country could proudly say Let’s Ride! The Denver Broncos were led by Mike Shanahan, the father of Kyle Shanahan, the current HC of the 49ers. They faced off against the Green Bay Packers and beat them 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII.

In the subsequent year, the Broncos made it back to the Super Bowl, this time, they faced off against the Atlanta Falcons after going 14-2 in the regular season. Once again, John Elway led this team to a dominant 34-19 win over the Falcons. The Broncos went back-to-back.

8. New England Patriots

The New England Patriots established themselves as the dynasty of the 2000s. The team six out of nine Super Bowls and in 2004 and 2005, they managed to win two consecutive championships. What makes it crazy is the fact that New England had 0 rings in 2000.

But the team got the greatest head coach of all time and the greatest quarterback of all time in Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. The Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVIII against the Carolina Panthers and the next year, they went on to beat a dominant Philadelphia Eagles team in Super Bowl XXXIX.

The Kansas City Chiefs can become the 8th team in NFL history to achieve this feat if they beat the San Francisco 49ers on the 11th of February. Will they be able to do it? One has to wait to find out!
