“There’s a trend and it’s not good.” Colin Cowherd places Baker Mayfield as the heart of the Cleveland Browns’ problems

“There’s a trend and it’s not good.” Colin Cowherd places Baker Mayfield as the heart of the Cleveland Browns’ problems

Baker Mayfield and Colin Cowherd

Baker Mayfield hasn’t exactly had the cleanest start to his NFL career. While he has had his impressive moments which include ending the Browns 18 game winless streak as well as ending a 17-year playoff drought last season. Not many people are sold on him.

This season, he only started 14 games and had 13 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Granted, he’s been playing the majority of the season with a banged-up shoulder but, even his past seasons haven’t looked all that spectacular.

With a QB record of 29-30 and a career quarterback rating of 87.8, he hasn’t lived up to the expectations that come with being drafted first overall. Even in his greatest season, he only passed for 3563 yards and 26 touchdowns. That is simply not considered as remarkable in today’s game. The good news is that he only threw 8 interceptions in 16 games last season.

It seems that Baker Mayfield is the problem with the Cleveland Browns and Colin Cowherd certainly believes this to be true.

Colin Cowherd believes the Browns will move on from Baker Mayfield in 2022

On a segment of his show, ‘The Herd’, Colin Cowherd was quoted saying “I would bring back Baker Mayfield, I’d get him healthy, let him play, I think he’ll be better. And then if you want to trade him, do it at the deadline. I don’t think he has much value after the end of last year.”

Cowherd further added “OBJ leaves. He was a star before him(Baker Mayfield) and after him. But he never worked in Cleveland. That would concern me a little. Jarvis Landry was more productive in Miami than he is now in Clevland. Last year he had less than 600 yards. Austin Hooper the tight end, he was a two-time pro bowler and a touchdown magnet. He’s invisible now. That’s a trend, that’s not good.”

About quarterbacks that could come in, Cowherd added “As much heat as Carson Wentz gets, he’s 6’5″, 237(pounds), big arm, super mobile, 27 TDs, and 7 picks. I would move on that in a second. If I could get Jimmy Garroppolo, 33-14, I would go get him.”

What the Browns can do about Baker Mayfield is a bit confusing as of now. No one knows how healthy he is right now. So, trading him becomes difficult as other teams aren’t sure of what they’re getting. Baker has shown positive sparks and is still young so releasing him doesn’t seem right either.

It seems that the Browns will either have to bring in some veteran talent and have a QB battle in training camp or, make a blockbuster trade for an Aaron Rodgers or a Russell Wilson. However, Rodgers seems to be headed to Denver or stay in Green Bay and the Seahawks have made it clear that they want Wilson sticking around.
