Novak Djokovic entered uncharted territory after winning the French Open final against Casper Ruud 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5. The Serbian won his 23rd Grand Slam at Roland Garros to get ahead of modern-day tennis great, Rafael Nadal with whom he shared the record for winning the most grand slam titles in the men’s game.
An enthralling victory in three straight sets meant that Djokovic won his third French Open title, a feat that also makes him the first player to win each grand slam title thrice. Ruud defended one championship point, but in the end, the might of Djokovic was far too great to hold out and the Serb became the oldest player to win the title.
While the day definitely belonged to the tennis legend, he was very well supported at the Roland Garros with numerous players from other fields, egging him on during the final. Amongst the most prominent was former National Football League quarterback Tom Brady who had the privilege of watching the match from the Serb’s personal box, sitting beside Novak’s wife Jelena.
Novak Djokovic thanked Tom Brady for supporting him during the French Open final
Keen-eyed football fans had already spotted Tom Brady during the game, but the biggest moment of respect between the duo came after Djokovic had finished matters on the court. After winning the match, Djokovic came over to his personal box in a bid to soak in the moment of glory with his close friends and family.
During that interaction, Djokovic and Brady shared a hug with the latter congratulating the Serb for winning his 23rd Grand Slam title. The duo share a relationship of mutual respect and they have often spoken about it in the past. For sports lovers, there could be very few things better than this, as the GOATs from two different sports come together in a moment of pure respect and admiration on both their parts.
Tom Brady is arguably the greatest NFL player of all time and had a remarkable career spanning over two decades in which he won 7 Super Bowl titles. Djokovic has often hailed Brady’s longevity and also spoke with the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback regarding fitness and work ethic.
Novak Djokovic also named Tom Brady among other football players in his victory speech, appreciating all of them for supporting him in the final. As for Brady, he’s making the most of his retirement, after calling an end to his football career this year on February 1st.
