“I’m up here for all those kids in Athens”: When Joe Burrow talked about poverty after winning the Heisman Trophy
Recently, Joe’s mother Robin Burrow talked about the time when her beloved son won the Heisman Trophy and delivered an incredible speech back in December 2019. She claimed that on the night after his son got the award, a middle-aged Black walked up to her when she was on her way to the bathroom at a dinner party in New York.
“He told me, ‘I just wanted to tell you, the thing I’m so proud of about Joe’s speech is that as a white athlete he stood up there and talked about the poverty where he’s from in his white culture,'” she stated. “And he said, ‘People will respond differently because, finally, a white athlete is talking about poverty.'”
For the unversed, Joe in his speech had talked about southeast Ohio with pride but had also expressed concern over the ever so increasing poverty rate in the region. “I’m up here for all those kids in Athens and Athens County that go home to not a lot of food on the table, hungry after school,” he had said.
“You guys can be up here, too,” Joe had said. Indeed, the man is an inspirational figure and the way he has carried himself off the field makes him an absolute fan favorite.
