It’s held between the winners of the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). From 1967 to 1978, the Super Bowl was played in early or mid-January. The team that wins the Super Bowl, defeating the opponents, is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy. It is named after the eponymous coach, who won the first two trophies. The game is also known as the “big game” or other terms by the non-sponsoring corporations, as the NFL is very restrictive upon using the “Super Bowl” trademark. Also, the Sunday game is referred to as the “Super Sunday” or “Super Bowl Sunday.”
