Who should the Chicago Bears hire to replace head coach Matt Nagy?
Matt Nagy
When Matt Nagy was hired by the Bears in 2018 he was assumed to be an offensive guru coming from the Andy Reid football tree and was thought to be the man to take Chicago in the right direction. After a stellar first season in the Windy City, finishing 12-4 with a division title and a team that actually functioned well, many thought they would be a serious force in the playoffs.
Of course, we all know how the 2018 wild card game played out with Cody Parkey’s infamous double doink ending the Bears season in heartbreak fashion. At the time you still thought that this team will be good, they’ve got a very stout defense and the offense had its complexities that made things difficult for opposing defenses.
A young quarterback and a new head coach, the sky truly was the limit. However, come the end of Nagy’s 4th season with the Bears, the opposite has happened as they followed up 2018 with 2 straight 8-8 season and 2021 is worse with double digit losses this year. And now Nagy is inevitably on his way out and the Bears need to find someone to lead this team that has potential future success.
There are many names that have been thrown around the Bears head coaching position like, Doug Pederson, Josh McDaniels, Kellen Moore and Ryan Day. All great candidates but one that sticks out a bit is a man coming off his best season with the Michigan Wolverines.
Jim Harbaugh expresses interest in coaching the Bears
Jim Harbaugh, former 49ers head coach and current Michigan Wolverines head coach. Since his move to college football in 2015 he’s been a winner. With a record of 61-24 that fact simply can’t be argued. What can be argued however is his lack of big time wins. It took until this season to finally beat Ohio State and to make the College Football playoff. The Big 10 was always going to be difficult to win in however and him finally managing to pull it off is a good sign. What the Bears really would like is tenure in San Francisco.
He finished his 4 season in SF with a record of 44-19-1 and with 3 straight NFC championship appearances and a super bowl appearance. He was the coach who turned Colin Kaepernick into a monster that torched the NFC and even gave the Legion of Boom a tough time every now and then. Most importantly, those 49ers team were built old-fashioned, similar to the current Bears.
A very tough, hard-hitting defense with players that can wrap up well and get to the QB. Now obviously the Bears would need to find high-quality players at more positions but the base scheme that Harbaugh liked defensively would fit with the team. In terms of offense, the Bears are designed to run the ball. Their offensive line certainly needs work but what they do well is run block and they’re blocking for a great two-headed monster in David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert. Throw in Justin Fields’ mobility and Harbaugh can run wild with this offense.
If he could reunite with Baltimore’s Greg Roman and bring him in as the offensive coordinator, that could be the perfect system to allow Justin Fields to develop into an unguardable star-like Roman had done with Kaepernick in the past and what he’s doing currently with Lamar Jackson.
Harbaugh has reportedly shown interest in coaching the Bears but there is competition from Las Vegas as the Raiders are looking to completely change things around. There’s also the issue of Harbaugh simply choosing to stay at Michigan but if he does move on, Chicago could really use him.
