Will the 49ers trade Trey Lance ahead of the 2023 season?

The quarterback battle in San Francisco is raging as their former third overall pick Trey Lance is getting back in game shape after recovering from the injury he suffered in a week 2 game of the 2022 regular season. Brock Purdy, who is currently the favorite to be the starter is also recovering from his injury and has the support of the 49ers GM John Lynch to be the starter.
During the NFL annual meetings in late March, the San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch revealed that the rookie sensation Brock Purdy has earned the right to be the starting quarterback of the Niners.
“I think Brock has earned the right with the way he played that he’s probably the leader in the clubhouse. I’ll let Kyle (Shanahan) make those kinds of decisions, but I know when we talked, Brock probably has earned that right to be the guy. If we were to line up, he probably would take that first snap,” said Lynch about Purdy. “We’re still very excited about Trey, but I think the way Brock played, he has earned that right to be the guy.”
Brock Purdy started the 2022 season as the third-string QB in the depth chart and became the starter in week 13 after Lane and Jimmy Garoppolo both went down with season-ending injuries. During his time as a QB for the Niners, Purdy impressed everyone and finished as a finalist for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award despite only starting 6 regular season games.

Trey Lance is receiving lots of interest in trade market
After Brock Purdy took over the starting job he never looked back. He led the Niners all the way to the NFC Championship game but an unfortunate injury to him during that game led to the 49ers’ loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Purdy just got the surgery done on his elbow following his injury and is hoping to be ready within the first few weeks of the 2023 regular season. Amidst this situation, the 49ers’ former third-overall pick Trey Lance is receiving a lot of interest in the trade market.
According to multiple reports, the 49ers are receiving a lot of calls regarding Trey Lance’s availability. Considering how much they gave up for moving up to acquire Trey Lance, the 49ers will not be in hurry to part ways with him especially since the severity of Purdy’s injuries is still unknown.
So, a Trey Lance trade could happen in the future and a team would get lucky to rope in the North Dakota State product but it’s highly unlikely that it will happen in the 2023 off-season.
