Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin clearly seemed upset on the ice as their team fell to NY Rangers 2-5, ahead of the Stanley Cup Championship. The game took several unprecedented turns, as Ovie smacked Rangers center Barclay Goodrow not once or twice, but multiple times.

The Capitals have not been playing well for the past few games and Ovie has been suppressing his emotions all the while. On Sunday afternoon, during the game, Goodrow slammed Ovechkin to the boards onto a referee. He immediately dropped to his knees, grabbing his mouth for a few seconds, before following the Rangers player to smack him.

Ovechkin kept on following and smacking Goodrow until an NHL official called for a penalty and ejection from the game. Currently, with their latest loss, the Caps have lost their last four games in a row, and their 7th in 8th game.

As Alex Ovechkin headed for the locker room, several small brawls took place on ice. Following Ovie vs. Barclay Goodrow, Caps forward Tom Wilson dropped the gloves along with teammate Martin Fehervary. Each of them engaged in their own small fistfights.

The situation on the ice got fired up, as Caps coach Peter Laviolette joined the fury, screaming at NHL officials, while NY Rangers coach Gerard Gallant cracked a smile. It surely was something to celebrate for the Rangers, with the Caps now rowing on the thinnest line to secure a Stanley Cup playoff spot.

As Ovechkin made his way back to the locker room, he made sure to sarcastically call off NHL officials, by clapping on their call on-ice. Looking at the Capitals state, they may be missing the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.

Sunday’s situation made it clear that the Capitals locker room is still in the process of accepting their harsh reality. Caps defenceman John Carlson said, “It’s difficult. Nobody wanted this. No one expected this. I think everything weighs on you a lot more”.

I think when stuff clearly hasn’t gone our way this year, it’s a lot difficult on everybody. When you’re not winning many games, confidence is a tough thing to just say and wake up with, ‘I’m going to be real confident with the puck today, and everybody else is going to be working for me.’ ”

Caps coach Laviolette noted, “We haven’t done it well enough where we sit in the position that we sit in. So it’s of our own doing where we’re at right now”, according to WashingtonPost.

Does it work against you a little bit? Yeah, I think so, from a confidence standpoint of coming in or the thought of moving onto the postseason and you’re not and that’s coming backwards at us. But we’ve got to fight through that and be better than we were today.”
