Auston Matthews’ 2023-24 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs seems a bit bleak at this point. All the ongoing rumors about his trade are escalating as days go by and a recent update on an Instagram post added to the flurry.

The Toronto star has been one of the best goal scorers in the National Hockey League and not just in his team. The 2x Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy winner is currently entering the last phase of his 5-year ongoing contract with the team.

If a decision is not made quickly he’ll likely taste the free markets after the 2023-24 season. Moreover, NHL insider Nick Kypreos stated that the forward player is interested in seeking an 8-year $15 million annual average value extension for his new contract slate.

Currently looking at the Toronto Leafs’ organization, keeping Auston Matthews will require several heavy liftings. Starting from roster shuffling to bookkeeping, the organization will have its hands full. Especially if they plan on keeping John Tavares, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander all together.

This case doesn’t look so positive looking at all the star-studded names compacted by the deadlines. According to Nick, the Leafs will not simply “hand it over” to Matthews, which is desired contract number. Negotiations will likely stretch for the time being.

Just like Matthews, Nylander is also getting quite the attention in his contract talks. The more time the Leafs’ take more likely Nylander’s trade talks will go stronger. There’s been wild talks and discussions going around the fan base about who the Leafs should let go.

It’ll be a hard decision for the team, but nevertheless, it is all just speculation. A decision has to be made at the end of the day. No matter which player the team decides to let go, it’ll be a setback for the organization. Hopefully, a decision can be made within time to set ease both the players and the fans.
