Following the Boston Bruins’ elimination in the 1st-round Stanley Cup series, the team is already planning UFA signings. The team already has a $72.9 million committed payroll for the 2023-24 season for 14 players.

Apart from them, they plan to retain a few important players before the trade season, but considering their payroll they don’t have much of an option. According to reports, writer Marc-Olivier Cook of the blog DLC suggested that Don Sweeney can explore options of trading Brad Marchand.

With the trade of Marchand, Bruins would gain the cap space to sign the unrestricted free agents and have some free space for future decisions. The Bruins signed ‘Rat’ to an 8-year $49 million contract including a signing bonus of $24 million in 2016.

In the 2023-24 season, he has a base salary of $3 million with a signing bonus of $2 million and a cap hit of $6.125 million, according to Sportsnet. Cook’s suggestion is only a suggestion as of now and no possible talks on Marchand’s trade have been brought up by the Bruins organization.

Prior to the playoffs, the Bruins went all out in the trade market. They invested a lot in signing Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov, and Garnet Hathaway. With few options to pick from in the upcoming trade season, the Bruins will also need to re-sign some of their crucial players.

These players include- Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Nick Foligno, Tomas Nosek, Connor Clifton, Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov, and Garnet Hathaway. Although Bergeron and Krejci are still not sure about their NHL future, they’ll need to make a decision during the summer break.

Both have stated they’ll spend time with their family, discuss and officially make a statement on their career with Bruins. As for Krejci, he stated that if he decides to come back to NHL it would be with Bruins and no one else. As for Bergeron, his physical ailments will be the most important factor in considering his path forward.

According to HockeyFeed, it is considered that the Bruins may want to build their core around players like David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, Pavel Zacha, Hampus Lindholm, and netminder Linus Ullmark. When asked about Brad Marchand’s thoughts on the UFA signing, he ripped Bertuzzi in a humorous manner.

Marchand stated that he would like for all of them to stay except for the 28-year-old forward, “Yeah, obviously, we’d love for all of them to stay except for Bert. No, we’d love for everybody to stay. They’re all incredible guys.”

Off the ice as well as players on the ice. They gelled with our group right away, and we all got along really well with all three of them.” During an episode of ‘Behind the B’, Marchand expressed that he now loves to play with his teammates whom he once may not have liked much.

He commented, “I still hate those guys”. “No, yeah, I’m sure there are some guys that I could find if I really thought about it, but you know I’m trying to love everybody now. It’s frustrating. I don’t like playing with guys that I hated because now I love them, and we get along great off the ice.”
