The past few days have been a tough one for Brad Marchand. While the Boston Bruins captain had a great time on the ice field, off-field issues had been burdening him. The veteran forward was left emotional after scoring the overtime winner against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This is because his maternal grandmother passed away recently.
Marchand had previously been under the spotlight for his actions in the previous encounter with the Maple Leafs. He was slammed for his play which resulted in the injury of Timothy Liljegren. Before the game, he even took a dig at Ryan Reaves and claimed that the forward was holding on to something from their previous remarks.
However, nobody knew what was going on in the minds of Marchand. The 35-year-old could have easily taken a leave and stayed with this family in this tough time. He though decided against it and paid tribute to his grandmother by playing the sport he loves.
After the retirement of Patrice Bergeron, Marchand was handed the captaincy role by the Bruins. The veteran forward has since then taken this role seriously and is trying to lead the team from the front. His overtime winner against the Maple Leafs summed up a perfect story for him and a touching tribute to his late grandmother as he guided his side to a 3-4 victory.
I don’t know if you could tell, but I was pretty emotional coming off the ice. It kind of all hit me in that moment. It was a good moment for the family in a tough timeBrad Marchand on his grandmother’s passing through Audacy.
Brad Marchand records natural hattrick in tough week against Blue Jackets
The loss of someone close is one of the hardest things to deal with in this world. It might take someone a little longer to recover from this setback. For Brad Marchand, it was a different story. As the captain, he had to lead the team and he did so. Following his overtime winner against the Maple Leafs, he scored a natural hat trick against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Bruins were trailing 1-0 in the third period when Marchand decided to step up. He scored from all three sides of the field to turn the game on its head and hand his side an important victory. This incredible performance capped off an emotional weekend for Marchand and his family.
Before his OT winner against the Maple Leafs, Marchand had gone eight games without scoring a goal. He would claim that he considered this as one of the worst phrases in his life. He though has bounced back strongly and has directly impacted two huge wins with his four goals over the weekend. The table toppers of the Atlantic Division are next in action against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.
