As the new National Hockey League (NHL) season approaches rapidly, there have been some shocking developments. One of these came on Sunday night when veteran centre Brandon Sutter announced his retirement after 13 seasons. He was suffering from some health issues and was released from the Edmonton Oilers professional tryout. The 34-year-old informed about his decision after this development.

The centre player has been off the ice field since 2021. He was affected by COVID-19 back then. This soon became a major issue for him as his health kept on deteriorating. In his official statement, he thanked his team, his teammates, and coaches while thinking about his family as the reason for his big decision.

In consideration of my health and my family, I am officially retiring from hockey,” Sutter said in his statement. “I’m grateful for the opportunity that Ken, Jay, and the Oilers organization have provided me the past few weeks. You need to be 100 percent healthy to compete in the NHL,” he mentioned.

A first-round selection at the 2007 NHL Draft, Sutter managed to appear in 770 games and collect 289 points while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes. He tried to make a comeback while signing a professional tryout contract with the Oilers but things did not work out for him in the end.

What is next in store for Sutter, whether it was the right or wrong decision, are the types of questions popping into the minds of many. The answer to that remains with Sutter.

He though has carried his family lineage forward. The Sutton family is regarded as one of the greatest sports families as several members have made their presence felt in the NHL over the years gone by. Fans would be hoping his children could continue to keep the family tradition alive and follow in the footsteps of their father.
