On Sunday, Carolina Hurricanes forward Brent Burns pulled off an incredible faceoff against Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby during the third period. The fans in the arena went wild as the defenceman snatched the puck, signaling the start of the third-round game.
Prior to Brent, Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho was set to take the face-off. He was booted out of the circle by the on-ice official as Brent took the field. Other than Aho, defenceman Jaccob Slavin was also present on the ice, but Brent took the opportunity.
It was his first faceoff since the 2015 season, as he took two faceoffs in his last game losing both during his previous five seasons. His highest number of faceoffs was against the Anaheim Ducks where he took 9 faceoffs in 2013.

Sidney Crosby on the other hand won 13,048 faceoffs in 25,034 attempts in his career. He’s 2nd in his career list for faceoffs having played 1,150 games scoring 1,457 points with 538 goals and 919 assists. Brent Burns‘ win against Crosby was celebrated on social media as fans cheered for the underdog.
In their next scheduled game, the Penguins confirmed that Casey DeSmith will be taking the goalie post, as Marcus Petterson continues to be out of the lineup with an illness. An update on him is yet to be provided by the team. As of now, the team is missing Josh Archibald, Jeff Petry, Ryan Poehling, Tristan Jarry, and Kris Letang.
The whole team came together to attend Kris Letang’s father’s funeral after asking permission from the organization. Despite their gruesome schedule, they went ahead with their sudden plans, showing support and care for one of the Penguins trio members.
The Penguins vs. Hurricanes match will be worth seeing, as till now, the Hurricanes swept the Penguins in their first three meets, winning by a single score each time. Their next match will also mark the last of their meets for the 2022-23 season.
The Hurricanes will also be back with goalie Frederik Andersen in the lineup. Till now the goalie has missed 29 games due to injury but his performance on the ice after joining has been pretty good. Against the Columbus Blue Jackets Frederik made 21 saves in a 6-2 win. He followed it up against the Penguins with 34 saves in a 2-1 win on Saturday.
After the win on Saturday, Andersen stated, “I’ll take the two wins for sure”. “You’ve got to keep building on just feeling good. Anyone who has been out longer periods of time will tell you they miss everything about playing and being part of the group, so it feels good to be back.”
