Canadian ice hockey player Brent Burns was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes by the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday. In return, San received young forward Steven Lorentz, alongside goalie prospect Eetu Makiniemi, and a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The Barrie native Burns, who had 54 points (10 goals, 44 assists) in 82 games for San Jose last season, has three seasons remaining on the eight-year, $64 million contract (average annual value of $8 million) he signed with San Jose in November 2016.

“I’m coming to a time where winning and having a chance to win it all is really all that matters right now,” Burns said, as quoted by NHL.com. “I’ve chased the boys in red and black around the ice for a while. They’ve got a lot of young guys that are just flourishing.

“It’s no secret that that team has been very, very good the last couple of years. I’m coming from a team where we had those goals as well. There are teams that are in that window and there’s nothing better. It’s awesome. Great city, great fans, great team. All that does is make you want to get to work and go.”

Selected by the Minnesota Wild in the first round (No. 20) of the 2003 NHL Draft, the 37-year-old defenseman has 777 points (227 goals, 550 assists) in 1,251 regular-season games, and 62 points (20 goals, 42 assists) in 94 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Burns has also played in 679 straight games, second among active players behind Arizona Coyotes’ Phil Kessel (982).

“Brent has been an elite offensive defenseman in the NHL for a long time,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said. “He has produced at a consistent level throughout his career, and we believe adding him brings us closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup.”
