“Important piece of our team” – Bryan Rust signs a 6-year deal with the Pittsburg Penguins

Winger Bryan Rust and the Pittsburgh Penguins pen down a 6-year contract extension while Rust could have become an unrestricted free agent. His 6-year deal accounts for $30.75 million with an annual average value of $5.125 million signed on Saturday. This contract will run through the whole 2027-28 season. The 30-year Penguins winger could have chosen to become a free agent as of July 13th but chose to sign up for an extension instead.
As of now, Bryan Rust has a career-high of 58 points with 24 goals and 34 assists in 60 games this season. He had scored 8 points, 2 goals, and 6 assists in the Stanley Cup Playoff games where the Pittsburgh Penguins got eliminated by the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference First Round. He was the third with the Penguins in goals and 4th in points while skating primarily on the top line with the star center Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel.

Penguins and Rust pen down a 6-year contract on Saturday
After Bryan Rust’s signing with the Penguins, he noted on Sunday, “I think for me, term of the contract was important”. “Obviously, six years is a long time … But I think our mindset was getting something done in Pittsburgh and if there was a little bit of it discount taken, I guess there could have been. But we’re happy here. This is a number that we’re really happy with. I’m very happy with it. And I think if that helps sign some other guys that would like to be here and would like a chance to win with this team, I think that’s awesome.”
Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ron Hextall said, “Bryan exemplifies what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin”. “Since being drafted by Pittsburgh, he has developed into a versatile player and leader on our team, capable of contributing in any situation. His leadership qualities and experience as a two-time Stanley Cup champion is an important piece of our team.”

Rush further continued to share his sentiments, as penned on nhl.com, “A lot of pride comes with saying you were able to play with one organization for most, if not all, of your career”. “I think that definitely played a little bit of a factor when making this decision. Obviously, my family and what’s best for them were kind of at the forefront. But those little things are always in the back of your mind too.”
During the 2010 National Hockey League Draft, Bryan Rust was selected by the Penguins as the 80th overall in the 3rd round. He has achieved 270 points with 124 goals, and 146 assists in a total of 424 regular-season games. While he led the Penguins to take the 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup Trophy by scoring 35 points in 21 goals, and 14 assists in 79 playoff games.
