The President’s Trophy curse continues to plague the Boston Bruins, at least for another year as the team loses in the 1st-round Stanley Cup series. Florida Panthers forward Carter Verhaeghe dealt the crucial blow to the Black and Gold Jackets at 8:35 in OT.

The arena fans went silent as Bruins lost Game 7 with a 3-4 record while Panthers fans celebrated their victory. The Cats will now be facing the Leafs in Game 2 of the playoff series. The Leafs too upset the Tampa Bay Lightning in an overwhelming victory at OT.

Ironically, Leafs were able to break free from their stagnant playoff curse while the Bruins will continue to deal with it till next year. In the 2022-23 regular season, the Bruins had the most remarkable journey, becoming the NHL favorites to win the Stanley Cup this season. Unfortunately, the dream was destroyed by their opponents early in the series.

Panthers defenceman Brandon Montour tied the game in the final minutes, stunning Boston fans and forcing them to overtime. Taking advantage of the situation, the Cats’ Carter Verhaeghe fired the puck marking it under the crossbar. Blind passes, miscues, and giveaways plagued the Bruins making them unable to put up a counter fight.

Defenceman Tyler Bertuzzi overwhelmed the Panthers in an early power play tying the game at 2, while David Pastrnak led the Bruins, scoring a rebound off Brandon Carlo’s shot. Jeremy Swayman failed to keep the Bruins afloat as Verhaeghe dealt the critical blow.

One of the saddest moments on ice was Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron hugging each other following the devastating aftermath. Some are of the opinion that this may have very well been Bergeron’s last game and if it’s true the fans will further break down.

The veteran player and team captain revealed that he played with a herniated disc hindering his performance. Neither Bergeron nor Marchand had any major influence on the ice during Game 7. He said for now, he’ll speak and spend time with his family and later look into it in the office.

According to CBS News, Bergeron noted that right now “it’s hard to process anything”. The team and the fans are “shocked and disappointed”  and it “hurts right now”. He’ll take this chance to give his NHL career serious consideration and speak with his family before officially making a statement.

He’ll be taking some time off, giving his career serious thought as he takes this opportunity to speak to his family. He saluted the emotional Boston crowd stating, “Thanks for the support all year”. “It’s a special city, it’s a special fan base and organization. It’s more just saying thank you for the support all year.”
