The National Hockey League (NHL) is now just a month away from returning. The 2023-24 season is expected to bring some heat to the ice as several records are in line to be broken. One of the major records in this is the goal-scoring one which is currently held by “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky. His legendary record is on the verge of getting surpassed by another legend, Alex Ovechkin.
Ovechkin, popularly known as the “Great Eight” is one of the greatest NHL players of all time. His play style has influenced several youngsters of the game. Now Connor Bedard, the number one draft pick of 2023, has backed the Russian forward to break the long-standing record and given his prediction when he could achieve the historic feat.
There has been a huge hype surrounding Bedard. The 18-year-old sensation has amazed hockey fans with his fluid skills and passage of play at a young age. He has time and again admitted to being a huge fan of Sidney Crosby, one of Ovechkin’s main rivals. When asked if the future Hall of Famer can break this record, he nodded.
“I think he gets it. What does he have (left), 74?,” Bedard said during his appearance at the 2023 NHLPA Rookie Showcase. “I’d say two years I’d give him. But pretty crazy that he’ scored that many goals.” He would further acknowledge how cool it was to rewatch his highlights and all the goals he scored.
He currently has 822 goals to his name and needs 72 more to tie the record of Gretzky. Given his age, Bedard prediction of two years might come true. Ovechkin himself recently claimed that he had got tired of this question.
Connor Bedard gives his take on Drake Curse
In the world of professional sports, it is usually common for players to face unfortunate situations. However, there have been some wild “superstitions” among fans when their beloved players and teams start losing games. None of them is more popular than the “Drake Curse”.
It is an internet theory that involves popular music celebrity Drake. He is known to be a big fan of sports and has been seen with several big names from different sports. According to fans, once Drake meets the players or teams, they start playing badly. Recently in July, he posted a picture of Bedard in his Instagram story with the caption “Dialed in” while he was on tour. The youngster has now given his take on this alleged curse.
“I didn’t know that. I just thought it was when he went to a game,” Bedard replied. He admitted that he would not shy away from a photo and would be the one asking him instead of the other way around. “But, if he wants a photo, I’m probably gonna say ‘yes’, ‘so, maybe try to break the curse,” he further added.
This response from the Chicago Blackhawks draft pick stunned the fans as he previously claimed to be a very superstitious person. Well, his reason could be justified as it is Drake after all.
