Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has built quite a reputation for himself over his long NHL years. He is often compared with Sidney Crosby and was even praised by Wayne Gretzky The Great One. His play has time and again caught the NHL’s eye as he kept producing awe-inspiring results on the ice.

Currently, it seems that the NHL star is close to securing 800-NHL points, joining great hockey legends including Wayne Gretzky himself. The 26-year-old is currently occupying the tricky 799 career point mark, only a mark shy from securing 800. He has recorded 799 points in 544 games with 281 goals and 518 assists.

In the ongoing 2022-23 season, he has secured 102 points with 42 goals and 60 assists in 57 games. Currently under an 8-year $100 million contract, the forward will have a chance to reach 800 in Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia Flyers at Rogers Place.

The four players who have already listed themselves on the 800-NHL milestone board are, Wayne Gretzky, reaching 352 games, Mario Lemieux with 410 games, Mike Bossy in 525 games, and Peter Stastny with 531 games.

The current 5th place holder is former Oilers Jari Kurri who reached 800-point in 558 games. McDavid will be able to snatch the 5th place for himself given his current game’s play record. The Oilers are currently battling both teams and have time to secure their wildcard spot in the Western Conference.

Reid Wilkins, host of Inside Sports on 630 CHED complimented Connor McDavid by stating, “McDavid is one of the deadliest offensive weapons in the history of the NHL”. “He’s scoring more goals than before and remains an elite passer. As long as the Oilers’ power play remains potent, the points will keep rolling in.”

Last time in the game against New York Rangers, McDavid secured 100 points. It marked his 6th season to do so in a regular season game. The only other player to achieve the 100-mark has been Sidney Crosby, the Penguins star player.

Crosby and McDavid have been close as friends-cum-rivals. Recently they both opposed NHL rule changes and asked for a shootout rule change in the game. Though it seems, changes will not be coming any soon, both NHL stars voiced their opinion against it.

Wayne Gretzky praised both players, though he favored Crosby a bit more stating McDavid still has some steps to cross before reaching The Next One’s height. While some agree and disagree, The Great One has made himself clear on his stance.
