“Worst *sustained* period of Flyers hockey ever”- Did Doug Favell play the WORST game of the NHL 55 years ago?

Doug Favell

Doug Favell is a name whose association with the NHL will never be forgotten. He was selected in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. One can say that he was a bit ahead of his time regarding the game as he used the ‘butterfly-style’ technique for his goaltending which has gained prominence in recent times as opposed to the stand-up style that dominated the game in his time.

Favell went on to become the center of the Flyers team as their main goalie. The Philadelphia Flyers made it to the semifinals of the NHL in 1973, with Doug Favell responsible for one shutout and an astounding GAA of 2.60 in a total of 11 games. After this, Favell was traded to Toronto Maple Leafs where he quickly rose through the ranks among other goalies and became their permanent No. 1.

The Philadelphia Flyers have commemorated Doug, 55 years later for his special place in the Flyers’ hearts. The 77-year-old was present at a golf tournament for charity a couple of months back where he met his old pal Les Binkley, the Pittsburgh Penguins goal-stopper.

Favell was talking about a game jokingly that he featured in 1967 b/w the Pittsburg Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers where Binkley was the Penguins’ goalie. “Whenever I see ‘Bink,’ I always kid him about that game,” Favell said with a laugh. “He looks great. We had lots of fun this summer, golfing together, and telling stories about that. My memory isn’t gone yet, even if it’s on life support.”

Even after 55 years, Favell’s sharp description of a particular game was impressive as hell. Both the expansions team gave it their all as the match went down to the wire. The Flyers coming out on top had their first shutout of the season, courtesy of Doug Favell. “I told Bink that there were 7,000 people at the Spectrum and it had to be probably the worst game ever played in the NHL”.

Doug Favell played 6 seasons for the Flyers before his trade to the Maple Leafs where he got the privilege to play alongside Plante. Favell considered him his mentor. Doug Favell would go on to switch sides in 1972-73 and join hands with the World Hockey Association.
