Dylan Larkin would have continued his celebratory mood if not for his “best friend” Tyler Bertuzzi joining Bruins. On Wednesday the Detroit Red Wings announced the contract extension of captain Larkin for 8 years. He signed a $69.6 million contract with an annual average value of $8.7 million.
Unfortunately, his celebrations lasted only for a while. The team announced the trade of Tyler to the Boston Bruins. Not only did Tyler leave the team, Filip Hronek was also traded to Vancouver Canucks. Tyler and Larkin grew up playing together in the same team, donning the same jersey for the past 8-seasons, according to NESN.
They bid an emotional farewell to each other as Larkin stated it’s been hard for him. During a press conference, the captain was asked how he felt about the trade of the two players. Larks talked about how it was the business side of hockey but broke down in tears while talking about Tyler Bertuzzi.

Dylan Larkin had to take a few moments off the mic to recollect himself before continuing his interview. Larks and Tyler Bertuzzi grew up close as the captain remarked, “Really difficult. The position our team is in now, it hurts”.
While it was hard for Larks to let go of his best friend, he talked rationally about how this was a necessary step needed for team rebuild. The management and the players had a long talk about trade matters before making any final move.
Larkin commented on Tyler leaving the team, “He was one of my best friends”. “I’m surprised [about the trades]. The last 24 hours is one of the hardest days [I’ve had] of the business side of it. Being excited, being happy, talking to Tyler yesterday and [him] being happy for me.”
“[I] saw him this morning and he was upset [about leaving] and I am too.” Larkin admitted that he has been upset about the situation but that didn’t let him stay in that condition for long. As the season approaches its end, the Stanley Cup run will begin.
All NHL teams are scrambling for a playoff berth before the race begins and Red Wings are no different. “I can continue to focus on what I have to do to try and get this thing where the guys in the room want it to go,” Larkin said.
Through the Tyler Bertuzzi trade the Red Wings acquired a protected Top 10 2024 first-round pick and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft. Though the 28-year-old forward suffered injuries, he put up 14 points in 29 games with 4 goals in the 2022-23 season.
Currently, he’s on his final year of a $9.5 million 2-year contract, with the Red Wings now retaining a $4.75 million cap hit. Last season he hit a career year with 30 goals and 32 assists in 61 games. In 305 NHL career games, Tyler has recorded 88 goals and 202 points.
The Bruins have been adding to their number, making their already winning team and threatening one to look at. Prior to adding Tyler Bertuzzi, the team also acquired Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathway in a deal with Washington Capitals.
