With a wondrous start in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger has proved himself capable enough to handle more responsibility. His commitment to the game paid off after the team named him the No. 1 goalie position for the 2022-23 NHL season.

Oettinger’s astonishing performance records in the Western Conference Second Round brought the team to the playoffs until they got hindered by the Calgary Flames. The team went down to a 3-2 OT loss in Game 7 of the First Round. Oettinger made 64 saves, with a 1.81 GAA, a .954 save percentage, and 1 shutout in 7 postseason starts.

Marking the goalie’s 4th stand in the team’s chart, he surely made a huge jump to be where he is now. During the NHL North American Player Media Tour, Oettinger commented, “It’s a new situation for me”. “I’ve never come into an NHL season expecting to be the No. 1 guy and it’s going to be really exciting for me to take on more responsibility.”

Expectations for him are high this season, as the Stars captain Jamie Benn stated, “I think we saw it last year. I mean, he was the guy”. “He’s pretty calm back there. He likes the pressure, goes about his business. He’s a true professional, he has got a great relationship with Jeff Reese, our goalie coach, and he’s determined to win. I think the sky’s the limit.”

His athleticism topped the limelight when the playoffs came this year. Though everyone had high hopes for him, his performance at the Cup run outdid their expectations. None of the players had a single doubt in them when the team announced him the No. 1 goalie for this NHL season.

His calm demeanor, as Resse states, “I haven’t seen too many goalies, especially at that age, that enjoyed every second, and I mean he enjoyed the competition, every second, in the playoffs”. “He had a smile on his face and he loved it. He absolutely loved it.”

“He doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low. He has a great demeanor for a No. 1 goaltender. Also physically he can play a lot of games as well. He showed that last year.” Oettinger is thrilled to bring out a combination of both excitement and competitiveness to this regular season.

He commented, “It’s a really tough position and you always have to be doing things to make sure you’re on top of your game, otherwise there’s going to be another kid like me looking to take my job now.”

“I just couldn’t be more excited to be a No. 1 goalie in the NHL this year. It’s my job to help this team get back into the playoffs.” This will be an exciting NHL season, as all teams are almost done with their preparations to skate the war.
